It's about frakkin' thyme!

Winter has taken its good 'ol time getting here but it looks like it's finally here. As usual I don't have the opportunity to go ride while the gettin's good so I have to wait until this weekend for my chance. But whatever, I'm excited to even get to go. I have lots of new gear to try out and play with. And when I get back look for the reviews to start showing up on the site. It's all new stuff for me but for everyone else I guess it's all "old news." Whatevs. Like I said, I'm excited and that's what counts. Flatter me and act excited too.

Christ...

I like to support smaller skate companies as much as I can. But the more I watch Pretty Sweet the more I want to go out and buy a Girl/Chocolate deck and skate the hell out of it. I've been a fan of Girl almost since their inception (at first I hated them because of the initial mass exodus from Plan B and the other Rocco companies...I was a loyal pawn. My anger towards Girl didn't last for too long though, as I went out and bought a Jovantae deck and the rest was history). I just watched Jesus' part and holy fuck, he's incredible. It's pretty much settled. I'm skating a Girl board next.

Review: Dinosaurs Will Die team video

Photobucket

I picked this video up from iTunes since there are no good, legit snowboard shops in the Pittsburgh area (to my knowledge). This is my first, yes, my first video I've ever purchased from iTunes. I'm the kind of person who likes to own a hard DVD or Blu Ray copy so this was a big step for me. I still want it on DVD but for now this will have to suffice.
From the get go, this video is full force and in your face. Good, raw, snowboarding. This is DWD's first team video effort and it's to die for. The opening montage goes through who you're going to see in the vid and the last rider they name is Jeff Keenan and it rolls right into his part from there. I really wish his part was longer but I'll take what I can get. Keenan let's us know what's up and nearly "kills himself"" in the process. From there we have Chris Larson's part. Lots of tricks. sick music, his part amps you up for the rest of the vid. Now onto Lucas Ovellette, again, sick music and lots of good trick selection. His nollies are the fucking shit. DWD gave Ben Bogart his first pro model board for this season so his part has a lot of expectations, and deliver on those he does. I knew I wasn't getting through this video without some hop hop and Bogart's part was the culprit. Bogart has earned his pro model with this one, good job my friend. The Rats section is basically a part showcasing all of the riders DWD flows boards to. These d00ds rip and deserve their board flow`age for sure. Brendon Hupp is a street/rail annihilator, and I really dig the song he rides to too. Matt Heneghan and Garrett Swenson share a part that opens with hitting a rail for some youngsters, kids love snowboarding. I love this part. Gangsta rap, dogs, rails...nuff said. Second to last part goes to Chris Brewster. I like him, don't know why, I just do. He seems like a nice guy who'd be fun to hang out with. Also, he shreds. Good music, good part. The curtains go to Sean Genovese. Genovese is the main guy we have to thank for this this video, but also, he filmed enough footy for a 2 song curtain closing ender of a part. Rippage. I've gone back and watched his part a number of times already. To me, at least, his part in this video is what a legendary part is made of. I know I'll be coming back to this video year after year for stokage, but Sean's part is the icing on the cake. He's having fun and ripping the world a new asshole all at the same time. He holds down the fort at DWD and still continues to film all of this sick shit. In a way, I idolize what he does. Cheesy to say I know, but whatever...
Do yourself and Dinosaurs Will Die a favor and go pick up this video...whether it's from your local shop or from iTunes, go get it and enjoy it. It's definitely a keeper and will get re-watched countless times I'm sure. You have my personal guarantee.

A dog does not smile.

“[It’s human nature] to ascribe meaning to what is not there. You see what you want to see. You believe what you want to believe, because that’s what your emotions do — they ascribe meaning to what is not there. They fool your perception as to what is real.

A dog does not smile, no matter how many times your kind thinks it does.”

Review: Absinthe Films "Resonance"

Photobucket Absinthe Films' latest offering, "Resonance," is precisely what the term's definition states; deep, full, and reverberating. From top to bottom, this feature has it all, rails, powder, spins, style, awesome scenery, you name it, it's in there. With a cast of heavy hitters (as always) such as Nicholas Muller, Scotty Lago, Brandon Cocard, Gigi Ruff, Danny Kass, Manuel Diaz, Eric Jackson, Blair Habenicht, Sylvain Bourbousson, Wolfgang Nyvelt, Lucas Debari, and Bode Merrill, you know what to expect, and that is total annihilation (on a snowboard). As always the musical selections are top notch, and compliment the riders and locations extremely well. Nicholas riding to Santogold is akin to bread going well with butter. Maybe somehow I missed the memo, but when Danny Kass graced the screen I was taken by surprise. I had no clue he was even filming with Absinthe last year but I'm glad he did. Style for miles my friends. Brandon Cocard's insanely long 50/50 down who knows how many stairs is freaking reDONKulous. The bonus features are worth a look as well...there are three Flipsides to check out (think "making of" style documentary for this here film), a photo album, sponsor clips, and the Whitelines edit competition winner James Castell's winning entry. Every rider in the video threw down hardcore and they all deserve a well earned pat on the back...as does Justin Hostynek, Patrick Armbruster, and everyone else at Absinthe who poured their hearts and souls into this film.

November 2012 Snowboarder Magazine - Jamie Lynn interview...

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

You NEED to get a copy of the November 2012 Snowboarder Magazine and read the interview/feature with Jamie Lynn. Best thing I've read in a snowboard magazine in quite some time. Jamie Lynn was the first pro I looked up to when I started snowboarding. His part in TB2 was rewound and rewatched so many times I'm surprised the tape didn't melt. On top of his riding, his artwork has influenced me from the first time I laid eyes on his brush strokes. His story is incredible and I'll always look up to him, his riding, and his artwork. Please, make sure to check out this feature on him.

Disney buys Lucasfilm? A new Star Wars movie by 2015? And a new movie every 2-3 years thereafter?

RIP

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

I remember when Forum just began. I was a senior in high school I think. I remember the first magazine ad with Peter Line and the nutshells. My best friend was the first person I knew with Foursquare outerwear. And my other best friend had Special Blend. I loved the "Program" companies. I'm seriously going to miss them. And I feel bad for all of the people who will be out of work and out of sponsors from this whole ordeal. Sucks.

Robot Food's LAME.

One of my all-time favorites. This video is just plain fun. The riding, the music, the antics...everything. I love this video. I can't wait for snow.

happy birFday to me!

Yes, today is my day of birth...whoop-dee-doo.
I got some extremely nice mitts called the Jeepster's from HOWL the other day. As soon as we finally get some snow in these parts I'm gonna give them a test run and I'll then report back here with an in depth review along with some photos. Interesting it shall be.
Also, I have some super nice Airblaster gear in hand and again, as soon as I can go out to ride in it expect a full review here.
I'm still waiting on some positive responses on some things before I can mention them here so until then my lips are zipped. Interviews, and more reviews is what my fingers are crossed for. Yours should be too.

Newsies...

I just recently became aware that Jeremy and Jonas Wray have started up their own brand of skateboards and they're calling it Wray Bros. Skateboards. I'm instantly a fan. I'm pretty sure that they don't have an official site yet but you can follow Jeremy Wray on twitter and that'll keep you up to date on everything related to the company as it evolves.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Also, I can now confirm that I'll be reviewing some products from the almighty Airblaster in the near future. Thanks to the fine and friendly people over at the land of pterodactyls and pills for hooking this up.

Through the good times, and bad...

I've been a lifelong subscriber to Nintendo Power. I got my first NES when I was in the third grade and instantly became a subscriber to the Nintendo Fun Club magazine. The next year that magazine transformed into Nintendo Power and from that point on I've been a subscriber. Today, I come home from a long day at work and see that I have the new issue and it's poly bagged with a special letter. After 24 long and loyal years, Nintendo Power Magazine is coming to a close. It's been a fun ride, but all good things must come to an end. Nintendo Power, I bid you farewell.

Stuff to come...

Fall is just around the corner and with it comes the preparations for winter. Hopefully, the Pittsburgh area does a little better in the snowfall department as opposed to last year. I'm lining up a few product reviews that I'm super stoked to have the opportunity to be a part of. I'll have more info on those as they become more concrete (don't want to count my chickens before they're hatched). I do know for sure that I'll have some sweet new snowboard flicks to write about from Videograss, Airblaster, and DinosaursWillDie (and hopefully a few more). In the mean time I'll be posting my usual randomness and photos of things I find interesting. As always, enjoy.

Cool old skateboard...

A guy I work with found this old skateboard in the house he moved into...the previous owners left it behind. He passed it along to me. Pretty cool.

Plan B Questionable

Yesterday while on my lunch break at work I was scouring eBay for old skate stuff. Low and behold I come across an OG copy of Questionable from Plan B. I had this video the summer it was released, but my best friend lost the box for me and from that day on I've been searching for another copy. 20 years!!!! 20 years have gone by and now, finally, my search has ended. In a few days I'll again have this video, and box in my hands. I'm giddy.

Syfy bummer.

One of my current favorite sci-fi shows Sanctuary was cancelled. Bummer. It looks like Syfy has some pretty decent shows on the horizon though so hopefully at least one of them will stick. I just started on Stargate SG1, I'm digging it.

44mm Plan B Hard-Ons

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

I wanted these back in the day...here I am 20 years later and I finally have me a set. I'm not going to be able to get myself to ride them though. I think I'm going to figure out a creative way to display them and hang them on my wall. I wish some companies today would make some wheels like these.....small....

Perfect.

This is one of my favorite skateboard photos of all time. It's perfect.

Party like it's '92.

So I got my 45mm Real wheels from '92, I have some Venture Featherlights from '92 on their way to me, and I have a Big Mess "Bill the Cat" deck (like a '92 football shape) on it's way to me too. I'll have some Puma's and I'll be pressure flipping in no time. I'm really excited to get this set up and skate it. I haven't skated anything but a modern popsicle shape since that shape became the norm.

Newsies...

Ron Dyrdek has officially acquired DNA distribution from Burton. Hip hop hooray!

Jaws is off I Path and on Dekline. I love Dekline.

Me, myself, and I. I'm going to, eventually, do a very small run of decks....hand silkscreened by myself....on quality hand crafted USA made decks. I have no clue what'll be on the decks or what monicker they'll be under. But rest assured. They're coming.

Now go check out Magenta's crew skating the streets of France's capital, filmed at the end of '11 and beginning of '12. http://vimeo.com/40282787

Some news...

I want to not like Elephant Brand skateboards so badly but it's hard to do that when the likes of Jason Adams and Neal Hendrix have joined the team. I'm so wishy-washy when it comes to anything Mike Vallely related. I hate his constant sponsor hopping and "outside of skateboarding" antics. But once again I find myself fully backing him and his new company. Do you hear me Mike V? DO NOT DISAPPOINT ME THIS TIME AROUND!!!

Pete Eldridge has joined the pro roster over at Cliché skateboards, seems like a good fit to me. Why not?

Roger Skateboards is releasing a video this summer. Check out their site for updates. It's going to be a sick sick sick video.

Review: Santa Cruz Rob Roskopp Face 2 reissue

I was ecstatic when I heard the news that SC was again reissuing the Roskopp Face 2. When they did it the first time the shape and colors were off from the OG so I refrained from getting one. You see, this here board, way back in '88 was my second ever "good" skateboard. So it holds a lot of sentimental value and I've wanted one hanging on my wall for some time now. I wasn't about to drop $800+ on an OG so I was keeping my fingers crossed on a reissue. And reissued it was. It looks spot on. The colors are great, the shape is a lot more reminiscent of the original, and the top graphic is just the plain old SC logo from back in the day. It's true to form, a reissue of the deck I skated when I was in the fifth grade. I'm anxious to see what Santa Cruz has on their plates next in the reissues category. Don't disappoint me!!! :)

randoms...

This morning I put on on my Nike McCutchen t shirt and a little while later learn that today it was announced that the Pirates and McCutchen came to terms on a new 6 year contract. Score.

Thrasher and Baker skateboards announced that they'll be jointly releasing the new Baker vid titled Bake and Destroy sometime later this year for FREE with the mag and then later online as a free download. Again, score.

In a week's time I started and finished reading The Hunger Games. Incredibleness. I'm about a quarter of my way into the second book at this time. And so far it's just as good as the first installment. I'm eagerly awaiting the movie (The Hunger Games) later this month.

My wife surprised me with the Santa Cruz reissue of the Roskopp Face 2 last week. It should arrive today or tomorrow, a little review will be posted here shortly thereafter.

That's all for now. At ease.

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

Welp...

Welp, my basement bathroom is all done. With that out of the way I'm able to concentrate on more pressing matter. Such as, going to see Star Wars Episode 1 in 3D. And doing my darnedest to go roll around on my skateboard...weather permitting of course. In other news...I'm glad to see that Santa Cruz has finally reissued the Rob Roskopp Face 2 deck. It was the second "good" board I had and I really didn't want to save up and have to track down an OG. I'm perfectly content with a reissue as a wall hanger. When I eventually get my hands on one of them I'll post pics here for sure. Because I'm sure that anyone who reads this life would not be complete without it.
Ok, you're dismissed...go drink some tea.

Not a whole lot...

Not a whole lot has been going on. Working a lot... at work as well as at home. My friend and I have been updating our basement bathroom/shower so that's my excuse for the lack of posts here.
So as of right now I'll be attempting to get back on track. "here we go again."

Holden Partners With The Impossible Project To Save Instant Photography

Portland, Oregon (January 23, 2012) Holden Outerwear is proud to announce our partnership with analog instant photography savior, The Impossible Project. To celebrate 10 years of creative and cutting edge outerwear, Holden is teaming up with Impossible to create a photography collaboration that will serve as our creative backbone and the visual language for the Fall/Winter ‘12 season’s marketing platform. Holden is proud to support Impossible on their mission to bring analog instant photography back to life by offering limited edition Holden X Impossible camera kits, which will include a Holden customized and refurbished vintage SX-70 Polaroid camera, Holden X Tanner Goods leather camera case, and custom Holden X Impossible co-produced instant film and filter presented in a custom wooden box.

To activate this collaboration, Holden chose 10 well known photographers to use Impossible film to shoot and capture their vision of our independent lifestyle through instant photography. The photos will be traveling in a multinational exhibition throughout galleries worldwide and at the most prestigious art show in the Americas, Art Basel Miami Beach. Choice photos will be used to create a limited edition Holden X Impossible tee shirt collection. Additionally, there will be a consumer instant photography competition, hosted by Impossible, where one winner will have their work featured in the exhibition (details on the competition to come.)

The Holden X Impossible camera kits and shirts will be available at Holdenouterwear.com, selected boutiques worldwide, and Holden X Impossible exhibitions next Fall.

Ben Puess, CEO of Holden said, “If you have ever seen a holden ad or website, then you know our love of analog photography goes back to our inception. As big fans of the medium, we could not be more proud to be working with The Impossible Project to help continue to further promote and support an art form we cherish. The Impossible team are the champions of a lost art and we are happy to showcase the immense warmth and creativity in their film. Our community, our shooters together with our friends at Vice, will work through out the season to capture a vision of the Holden “life well led” means. The best thing is that not only will we end up with some great images and gallery shows but we will be able to actively encourage others to find the timeless-in-an instant moments that make life so fun by offering the film and camera.”

Ron Dyrdek is buying Alien Workshop...

I think this is a good thing. Rob's been with Alien since day one. You can say what you want about him and doing tv shows and being involved with a lot of things outside of skateboarding...he always gives back and is still a skate rat at heart. And as much as I love snowboarding, I'll always be a supporter of actual skateboarders owning skateboard companies. Kudos.

HOLDEN Launches New Sportswear Collection At AGENDA

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

HOLDEN Launches New Sportswear Collection At AGENDA

Portland, OR/USA - January 4, 2012 - Holden is proud to announce its first ever sportswear collection for men and women. Slated for Fall 2012 delivery, the collection is inspired by and built upon the brand’s technical know-how and its heritage as a Northwest-based winter outerwear brand. Including street jackets with technical attributes, sweaters, layering, a men’s water repellent denim line, and more, Holden Sportswear provides a whole new way for our consumers to experience Holden off the hill. This collection shares the brand’s core values—creativity, individuality, timeless-design, and eco-friendlier choices—and it’s designed to merchandise with our winter range seamlessly.

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

To celebrate Holden’s transition into a multi-season brand, we have partnered with two icons of streetwear: Stussy and fine luggage maker Herschel. The result is a selection of premium collab items (including our “Stussy by Holden” collection) that delivers everything you need from the mountaintops to the city streets.

“Holden’s roots are in snowboarding, but the truth is, most of our snowboard-specific pieces are already great crossover items,” says Nikki Brush, Holden design and development manager. “We see folks everyday rocking Holden jackets on the mountain and then taking them to the street. That’s why our sportswear collection is a natural evolution. We’ve remained true to the Holden aesthetic, but we are also dedicated to giving our consumers a level of performance that you just won’t find on most day-to-day sportswear.”

Holden’s philosophy is about embracing and supporting a considered life. We strive to make the best products we can to help you feel happy and healthy in your own pursuit of the activities you love.

The Holden Sportswear collection will be shown at Agenda in Long Beach, CA on Jan 5th - 6th, ISPO in Munich, Germany on Jan 29th - Feb 1st, and SIA in Denver, CO on Jan 26th - Jan 29th.
