Holden Partners With The Impossible Project To Save Instant Photography

Portland, Oregon (January 23, 2012) Holden Outerwear is proud to announce our partnership with analog instant photography savior, The Impossible Project. To celebrate 10 years of creative and cutting edge outerwear, Holden is teaming up with Impossible to create a photography collaboration that will serve as our creative backbone and the visual language for the Fall/Winter ‘12 season’s marketing platform. Holden is proud to support Impossible on their mission to bring analog instant photography back to life by offering limited edition Holden X Impossible camera kits, which will include a Holden customized and refurbished vintage SX-70 Polaroid camera, Holden X Tanner Goods leather camera case, and custom Holden X Impossible co-produced instant film and filter presented in a custom wooden box.

To activate this collaboration, Holden chose 10 well known photographers to use Impossible film to shoot and capture their vision of our independent lifestyle through instant photography. The photos will be traveling in a multinational exhibition throughout galleries worldwide and at the most prestigious art show in the Americas, Art Basel Miami Beach. Choice photos will be used to create a limited edition Holden X Impossible tee shirt collection. Additionally, there will be a consumer instant photography competition, hosted by Impossible, where one winner will have their work featured in the exhibition (details on the competition to come.)

The Holden X Impossible camera kits and shirts will be available at Holdenouterwear.com, selected boutiques worldwide, and Holden X Impossible exhibitions next Fall.

So, Christmas has come and gone. Mike Vallely has againe quit his sponsor, Powell Peralta, and again started his own company...this time by the name of Elephant Brand Skateboards. Review: Airblaster's 'Thank You Baby.'

Fun. That's the first word that comes to mind when I think of Airblaster. I was first introduced to Airblaster when I picked up their dvd December some years back (one of my all time favorites). I've missed a lot of their videos since December, but I was lucky enough to have them send me a copy of their latest effort titled "Thank You, Baby" to check out.......and check it out I did. The main feature is short and sweet. It chronicles the travels and riding of Nick Dirks and Brandon Cocard throughout Russia...awesome stuff. I've always wanted to go to Russia, more than likely I'll never make it there in this lifetime so why not experience it vicariously through some of Airblaster's finest? I'm all for it. It looks to me like they had an incredible, once in a lifetime experience and I enjoyed taking it all in from the comfort of my own humble abode. As with the other Airblaster dvd's,
Thank You, Baby offers a lot of bonus features. My favorite is the one with Travis Parker and Leanne Pelosi shredding some pow at Baldface Lodge. Oh! And the one with Nick Dirks and Jed Anderson skating at various concrete parks is not to be slept on either, good stuff right there. Review: The Art of Flight

The Art of Flight...what hasn't already been said about this snowboarding masterpiece? Two years in the making, brought to you by Travis Rice, Red Bull, and Brain Farm, this snowboarding super movie epitomizes what snowboarding is about and where it's going. Absolutely the highest quality picture and sound to have ever graced a snowboard flick (at least from what I've personally experienced)...Blu Ray all the way baby. I do love the fact that when you purchase this movie that you get both the Blu Ray and dvd versions packaged neatly together all for one price. Other snowboard film production companies take heed, this is how to do it. Onto the film itself.
Incredible.
The ensemble cast of riders is legendary...Travis Rice, Mark Landvik, Jeremy Jones, Nicolas Muller, John Jackson, Scotty Lago, Pat Moore, DCP, Jake Blauvelt, Bjorn Leines...it doesn't get much better than this folks. The tunes rock and fit the tone of riding perfectly. The story that goes a long with the shreddage is just as spectacular, from beginning to end this film belongs on snowboarding's top shelf. Travis Rice and his crew always seem to do the impossible...out do themselves year after year. I have no clue what he has up his sleeve next, but I seriously can't wait to see what it is.

Earlier this week Travis Rice was a guest on Conan O'Brien's late night talk show. It was pretty 'effin cool to see him in the hot seat talking about The Art of Flight and goofing around with Conan. If you missed it I'm sure you can find it online somewhere (TNT's site, or maybe Hulu or YouTube). It's definitely worth your time to check out. Speaking of The Art of Flight, I got to sit down and watch it myself earlier this week and was blown away. Look for my review on the site in a few days. And then, a little further down the road from that look for my review of Airblaster's new movie "Thank You, Baby." I'm super excited to check that one out...always good stuff to be had from the folks at Airblaster.

Review: Absinthe Films' 'Twe12ve'

Absinthe Films' releases are something I look forward to every season. They always showcase a wide variety of riding styles, terrain, riders, and locations...and their filming and production is top shelf. I also always enjoy the soundtrack in Absinthe Films' releases. I've become a fan of quite a few bands that I've discovered from their videos. This season's release, Twe12ve, is exactly what I've come to expect from them...jaw dropping riding shot beautifully and set to the most fitting music. The riding is absolutely incredible. When I'm watching these guys (and girls) do what they do sometimes I think to myself "what the hell is going through their head when they're committing to doing this?" Ten to fifteen years ago we wouldn't have even considered most of what they're riding and doing as humanly possible...it just blows me away when I think about it. Honestly, everyone in this
video is incredible. But if I'd have to name a few rider's parts as "stand outs" I'd have to go with: Gigi Ruf, Nicolas Muller, Bode Merrill, JP Solberg, Wolfgang Nyvelt, Dan Brisse, Romain Demarchi, and as always Annie Boulanger. Go out to your local shop and purchase Twe12ve...and then go online to the Absinthe site and stock your shelf with some of their past releases, they all rule.

It may just be that I'm a huge dork, but I got really excited when I saw this Stargate inside the haunted house at the Pittsbugh Zoo's "Zoo Boo" over the weekend. It's a pretty craptastic photo (thanks Blackberry) but I needed some type of photographic evidence of it.

Reviews: Shoot the Moon & Retrospect

This is Videograss' third year of releasing snowboard flicks...this year they upped their ante and released a whopping three different films, Shoot the Moon, Retrospect, and a trick tips video. I had the pleasure of checking out Shoot the Moon and Retrospect, here's what I thunk.

Shoot the Moon, to me, follows suit with the previous seasons Videograss releases. It's more raw and un-polished than most snowboard videos out there today. At times, it reminds me of the Baker and Deathwish skateboards videos...hi-jinx, crazyness, lots of quick cut in the editing. I'm a fan of the past Videograss releases so as you could imagine, Shoot the Moon was right up my alley. It's more of a rail, urban terrain type of video as opposed to a back country, freeriding vid...but I'm okay with that. It's all snowboarding and as long as they're out there having fun and putting out quality material, I'm all for it. Everyone featured in the video shreds, but stand outs for me would go to Justin Benee, Jake Olsen-Elm, Jed Anderson, Louif Paradise, Jordan Mendenhall, Darrell Mathes, and Gus Engle. Go check it out.

Next up is Retrospect. This here snowboard flick is more of an all around, smorgasbord of snowboarding goody goodness. There's something in here for everybody, I'm sure if anyone pops this disc into their player it'll put smile on their kisser. As well as the incredible riding, there's a lot of scenic eye candy that I always enjoy. The riding in this video is incredible...from the rails, to the kickers, to the back country...it's off the charts. The soundtrack is killer as well, kudos my friends, kudos. Stand out parts for me go to Ben Bilocq, Bryan Fox, Ethan Deiss, Jake Blauvelt, Xavier De Le Rue, and Harrison Gordon. Again be sure to check this video out, there's something here for everybody.

Amp not that great...

Out of all the energy drinks that I've tried, Amp is probably my least favorite. Well, it's my least favorite from the full priced, heavy hitters you normally find at every convenience store. I've had many weird, small company energy drinks I've found at dollar stores and bargain type stores and some of those have been horrid (while some have been incredible). But yes, Amp is the worst out of the heavy hitters of energy drinks. It doesn't give me the feeling of a "boost" like others do...and, it's flavor is nothing to write home about. It basically tastes like Mt. Dew. I feel that I get nothing more from drinking an Amp than I would from drink a can of Dew. If I have my choice (which I do, I just bought some Amps because they were on sale at CVS) I always choose NOS sugar free energy drink...incredible taste, incredible boost, and the can looks like a can of rocket fuel.

P.S. I need to be drinking energy drinks as much as I need a new hole in my head. I need to be drinking more water. End of story.

"We went on a trip to New York City a few months back and we came back with this Capsule.

What's a goddamn "Capsule" you might ask? It's basically a montage of us skating around with our friends. It's not HD, it's no crazy 5 hour mission on some perfect spot to get the latest combo or some crazy stunt on tape, but rather some plain old fashioned street skateboarding with whatever happened that day, if our friend managed to film it.

This past Monday, 9/5/11, my new baby daughter, Lily Evangeline Stringhill, entered the world. She's as beautiful and perfect as I knew she would be. "first and foremost, skateboarding DOES NOT NEED anyone to do anything for skateboarding. skateboarding was doing just fine before it became corporate, and in my opinion it is worse off now that at any other time in its short history. koston, as someone eluded to before, is concerned about helping himself. he is rich and a wannabe celebrity, and a fucking Scientologist at that. I could do without the berrics as most people who skate would not have missed it had it never existed. basically steve berra failed as an actor and came up with a good plan to exploit the current market. i am not saying that there is no good in their hearts toward skateboarding, i just personally do not appreciate when anyone takes it upon themselves to represent skateboarding, or change it for whatever reason, especially when that involves creating an image thats only benefit is to the one making the change, e.g
., corporate, non skate sponsorship. not to mention nikes horrible human rights record. skateboarding belongs to EVERYONE WHO SKATES. not these glorified assholes. for every pro, there is a hometown hero who kills it. i am cool with people getting paid to skate, but when it gets to this level of psuedo celebrity infighting, yes i am entertained, but, it has nothing to do with skateboarding, only some deuchebags who skate. so guys, stop pretending that who you are and what you do is more important than the rest of us who skate for fun and dont need anything from you."

Review: Videograss - Bon Voyage

I finally got my hands on a copy of Videograss' newest snowboard video Bon Voyage (hey, it's still their newest video until their "new" newest video is released in a few months). This is Videograss' sophmore release and it pretty much holds true to what one would expect from them...raw, unadulterated, street (mostly) snowboarding. If you enjoy skateboard-inspired snowboarding then you best be sure to pick this one up. There's a lot of rails, ledges, banks, roof tops, etc...and there's also some pretty sick back country-ish footage to boot as well. I'm not talking about Jeremy Jones back country, but it's still powdery goodness none the less. Some people these days are under the impression that if you're sliding rails and not making powder turns then it's "not snowboarding." Well, when I first strapped into my Gnu Pharoah some 20 years ago I was out to have fun. It didn't matter if I
was hopping over tombstones in my local cemetery or making "S" turns at 7 Springs...I just wanted to have fun. And after watching this video, it brings me back to those days when I first started snowboarding and things weren't so serious. Just strap in and enjoy the ride. Stand out parts in this vid for me came from Leblanc, Nima, Mathes, LNP, Anderson, Bilocq, and Mendenhall. Pick this video up and let the good times roll...forever.

The griptape is extremely strong.

---This is a great board, with less than 6 hours worth of skating time on it, and I have done absolutely no tricks on it. It's pretty close to brand new. I payed $160 for it this time a year ago. I am looking to sell it to get some money for some running shoes or something, but skateboarding is no longer a hobby I enjoy.

Pictured above are two of the most recent Cease & Desist skateboard's releases. C&D are a company that re-issue old, out of production, sometime controversial decks that a lot of skateboard collectors really want to hang on their walls but can neither find nor afford the OG's. Also, these decks are made in the USA and have hand silk-screened graphics which is a rarity these days and also makes them awesome skateboards to, well, actually skate rather than be wall hangers. There is some controversy about this company being that almost all of their releases are without permission from the pro-skater's names printed on the boards and without permission from the companies that originally released them (there's been a few where pro's have worked with C&D, gotten paid, and actually signed each and every board sold...pretty cool). There are two sides to every coin. Like I said, these boards are
high quality and give people an alternative to dropping thousands on OG's. And keep in mind, when a lot of these boards were originally released the graphics on them were used illegally in the first place and the companies were served with cease & desist orders. But there's still the topic of using pro's names on the decks and said pro's receiving no compensation. I could go on and on with different ways to look at the dilemma but in the end it all comes down to supply and demand. There are a lot of skateboarders out there, young and old, who want these boards to either skate or hang and Cease & Desist are supplying the demand. What's my take on the matter? I'm not rich, I'm far from it. I wish that the skater's got a cut from the sales of these boards and I hope that in the future they move towards releasing them in conjunction with the pro's. But in the meantime, if C&D release a
board I have a fond memory of and I want to hang on my wall I'm damn sure gonna swipe it up rather than attempt to save up a few thousand (cutting into my kid's college fund) and hope to get the OG sometime down the line (ie: never). I say kudos to you C&D, kudos indeed.

So, after more than 15 years I'm again rolling around on a plank of wood that bears the Plan B logo. Yeah, I know that it's not the same company that it was back in '92 but it still puts a smile on my face that they made a come back and have been successful with it. They have a sick crew of riders, have been putting out some quality decks from PS Stix, and even the graphics, when not part of some logo theme series, are looking quite attractive. I also like that they've been re-issuing some of their boards from yesteryear (Sheffey vivisection and Duffy Primus <-- I just picked that one up for my wall). I really hope they continue with the reissues, *a suggestion, Hensley tribute. Also, I've been hearing about this fabled new Plan B video they've been working on forever, hopefully it'll see the light of day sooner rather than later. All in all, I'm stoked to be skating a Plan B board
again. If you need me I'll be behind Dee's in their parking lot practicing my pressure flips.

The one that didn't get away...

The summer of '92 was a special time for me (and for skateboarding in general). During that Summer Plan B released Questionable...a video that impacted my life forever and changed the face of skateboarding as we all know it...and it still holds up to today's standards almost 20 years later. That video depicts everything that skateboarding was for me during that time...Matt Hensley retiring before his time was up, Primus, Pat Duffy being sent from the future to tear skateboarding a new asshole, hi-top skate shoes cut into low-tops, Colin Mckay skating to Iron Maiden and showing the world he killed it in the streets as well as on a vert ramp , Ryan Fabry not blowing any bubbles, Olivelawn, wishing I possessed 1/100th of the style that Sal Barbier does, Del & Heiro, everyone skating cool colored blank boards, Sean Sheffey late shove-it'ing everything in sight, huge pants with the
legs cut uneven...on purpose, Rodney Mullen doing stuff no one has ever done and no one will ever do again, Green Day, The Offspring, & Pennywise (and no one else knowing who the hell they were yet), wishing I possessed 1/1000th of the style that Mike Carroll does (also, wishing I was cool enough to rock braids with rainbow colored rubber bands), Rick Howard skating to Ned's Atomic Dustbin and switch pressure flipping the SD convention center steps, that slam section..........that slam section, Danny Way completely destroying everything in his path. During that time period I pretty much only skated Plan B boards (with the occasional Blind, World Ind., and 101 thrown in from time to time to keep things fresh). I never thought to hold on to any of my old boards once I was finished with them and set up a new one. The old ones were either cracked and then focused into oblivion or handed
down to one of my friends who could still squeeze a tiny bit more life out of them. Luckily, I was wise enough to hold onto one of them...Hensley's tribute/retirement board. I recently unearthed this fossil from my parent's attic and it instantly brought back a ton of awesome memories. Just last week, someone offered me a decent amount of money to give this deck up, despite the shape it's in. I respectfully declined his offer. This one's staying with me.

Review: Real 'Since Day One'

There's been a load of hype for this video and it's much deserved. Real is one of the best, truest, "realest" skateboard companies in existence, run by actual skateboarders from top to bottom...their boards aren't made in China...if there's one company that you, as a skateboarder, should feel obligated to tip your hat to it's Real. They have been down since, you guessed it, day one. One of my top 10 videos of all time is Non-Fiction (Real, if you're listening, release a dvd box set). Non-Fiction changed me as a skateboarder. That video helped move me out of my "World Ind." stage and into my "skate to have fun, screw everything else" phase that I'm still in some 15+ years later. Since Day One clocks in at around an hour I believe and it's nothing but awesomeness from beginning to end. It opens with a touching tribute to one of our fallen brothers, Johnny Romano. Afterwards, rolls the
intro montage followed by everyone's parts. There's not one part in this video that's a clinker. As usual, there's some parts I tend to want to watch more than other but for the most part this is a video that I'll be watching straight through every time. Stand out parts for me are Justin Brock, Torres/Dompierre shared part, JT Aultz, Romondetta, Ishod Wair, Schaaf, and of course the one and only...Huf. Words cannot describe the joy of finally having a new Huf part to watch over and over again. Schaaf's part isn't one to be slept on either...solid, classic vert skating...keep it up Max. This video rules and will force you to get out of the house, off the computer and out pushing around in the streets where we belong.
Never stop.

Things I'm stoked on right now...

The new Real video.
I'll be picking up a copy of Real's new video Since Day One either tomorrow (official release date 4/11) or on Tuesday, been waiting for this one for a while now. I've heard nothing but good stuff from the people who've seen it and I know it's going to be the best skate video anyone's seen in a while. Pretty much everything Real does is golden and this video will not disappoint. I'll have a review up shortly after I pick it up.

Skateboarding.
Skateboarding, anything and everything related to it. I got my first skateboard for my ninth birthday and here I am pushing 32 and still just as stoked as the first time I butt boarded down a hill in 1987.

TV.
I watch too much tv right now, I hate to admit. I've always loved anything sci fi related and most of what I currently watch is just that. I'm on my second go around of Lost (best show ever)...I'm also watching Firefly, Fringe, Merlin, Sanctuary, Nikita, 30 Rock, Vampire Diaries, and Deadliest Catch. All are excellent shows and I'd recommend them all to anyone looking for some quality television.

Lastly, Spring is here. Beautiful weather, park with the family, hoodies, skating...good times all around. Go outside and have some fun.

A few days ago 1031 skateboards announced that Ben Raybourn parted ways with them on his behalf, and at the same time was let go from Landshark wheels. I'm a huge 1031 fan, and Raybourn fan so this news initially bummed me out. Eventually, I came to terms with it knowing that he probably had something bigger and better for him lined up. Well, a few days go by and now Ben's officially on Slave. Sick. He should have a pro board out in 3 months or so, be on the lookout. Also, still support 1031, the rip.

Review: Weekend Snowboard's Heikki Sorsa 155

I was fortunate enough (thanks people at Weekend) to get my hands on the Heikki Sorsa "Adventure Island" 155 from Weekend snowboards, so that in turn, I could give you guys an honest review of it. So here it goes.

This board is fun as heck, "no doubt...no doubt in my mind." (first person to comment where that quote is from will get some free stickers). The Adventure Island 155 is the all around, swiss army-like board in Heikki's arsenal of pro models available from Weekend. Where ever you want to go, this board will take you there, and then some....groomers, park, powder, rails...your ass is covered (in some Bond Talma's, I hope).

The graphics are killer, done up by the notorious Sean Barnhart. One thing I really like about this board (which really plays no role in the performance side of the board) is the texture of the top sheet. Back when I was in high school, a buddy of mine got a Division 23 Marc Morisset and it had the same type of textured feeling top sheet. So, yeah, just feeling this board out of the plastic brought back some good 'ol memories.

In closing, I'd like to say that this board slays the slopes of 7 Springs and I'm positive it'll get you through whatever situations you find yourself in at your local mountain. Head on over to the weekend site to check out what they have to say, read up on all of the technical info, and they also have a nifty little online shop where you can actually purchase said model if you feel so inclined. DEW IT!!!

Review: Bond Outerwear

Bond is an outerwear company any snowboarder should actually want to support. Every piece of outerwear they put out is combed over to ensure that they're doing everything possible to be as sustainable as possible. All of their outer shells and inner liners use a blend of recycled PET (made from plastic bottles and containers) and virgin polyester that is completely recyclable. Both the PET and polyester have been used before and can be used again. Thumbs up in my book. All snaps, buttons, and zipper pulls are made from recycled plastic pellets used in heavy industry. Bond use a top down sustainability model, and are a carbon neutral company. All of these practices add up to equal one company that has the environment in mind. I like to think that snowboarders would want to support a company that's attempting to sustain the environment that they/we thrive in.

The jacket I had the pleasure to check out is the National in the Aruba Bruce Illest colorway.

This jacket is solid from top to bottom. It features 10k waterproofing, 10k breathability, and fully taped seams...all staples when you're out cruising in the elements.

There are hood aperture adjustments that are accessible from within the chest pockets, under pocket flap glove holders, and 14" pit zips to cool you off when you need it.

The collar has a snow dam to keep out, you guessed it, snow, when your forehead deep in pow (or when you bail and are ragdolling down the hill). Bond's "phantom thumbderwear,' "damp-ass eliminator," and a goggle wipe/snotrag on the right hand gaitor are also features you're going to find on the National jacket for '11.

To top things off, you'll find that there's a media stash sleeve inside the chest pocket and a "waste management pocket" to prevent you from tossing your candy wrappers onto the mountain. Forgive me for sounding like a broken record, but, the Bond National is rock solid from top to bottom.

The pants I got to go with the above jacket are the Bond Talma's in Ash.

Again, these pants have 10k waterproofing and breathability and are fully seam sealed. Also, they feature 40gm's of recycled poly tactical insulation to keep you toasty as needed.

But, when you don't need it you can unzip the "14" taint getting hot inseam vents." The cargo pockets and hand warmer pockets are nice and roomy so you can store whatever it is you need to store without it getting too crowded in there. Both cargo pockets also have the under flap glove holder straps to boot too.

To top things off the Talma's feature zippered accordion gussets, Bond's no-scuff pant jack up system, and the damp ass eliminator system.

If you're looking to stay warm and dry on the hill, all the while keeping a clean conscious in regards to doing something positive for the environment...look no further than Bond's National jacket and Talma pant. Or, check out any of their other styles Bond has to offer. They have something to float just about everyone's boat.

Review: Toy Machine 'Brainwash'

I remember going into Revolutions skate shop back in the day looking for a new skate video. The only new video they had was Toy Machine's Welcome to Hell. At that time, I knew Toy Machine was Templeton's company, and I liked the way their ads looked in the magazines...that's pretty much it. Little did I know that Welcome to Hell would become an all time favorite of mine and spawn a love for all things Toy Machine from that point on. Fast forward to now...there's been quite a few Toy Machine videos since then, and every one has kicked serious ass...Brain Wash is no different. It features the entire team (Ed Templeton, Billy Marks, Matt Bennett, Leo Romero, Austin Stephens, Johnny Layton, Diego Bucchieri, Nick Trapasso) and introduces the new ams Collin Provost, Daniel Lutheran and Jordan Taylor. The skating is gnar as one would expect from a Toy Machine video. I was left yearning for
more footage from Templeton, Stephens, and Diego, but hey, people in hell want ice water. I have faith that Ed Templeton can dish out one more full length part still (if not more). The music in the video fits properly. It has a different feel to it than previous videos though, but I like it none the less. There's no blank spaces without music, from beginning until end it's cut from one song to another with no breaks in between. It works and I like it. If you haven't already, go out and pick Brain Wash up, it rules...'nuff said.

My long time friend Josh Blasko told me the other day that he wanted to write something for Seasons, so I told him to "gopher it". Here's what he had to say...

Skateboarding is something that I truly hold dear to my heart. To me it's poetry in motion, total connection to the mind, body and soul. It's nothing at all and everything all at once. Any person to ever set foot on board understands what I'm saying. It's a passion, a drug and a total committed relationship that lasts forever. Skating isn't the X-games and mega ramps to me, It's ollieing down 4 stairs for the first time, or doing a flat ground kickflip while your friends are yelling and screaming for you like you just 360 flipped the Gonz gap. I'm now 31 years old and the people I skated with when I was 14 are still my very best friends. It's weird how a piece of wood, some metal, and urethane can shape a persons life, but if you ask anyone who skates they'll explain it to you like it's their job. And it doesn't matter if Danny Way is telling you or Joe Blow rolling around in a school parking lot they'll both talk with a passion and spirit that few really understand. I've learned more from skating than I've ever learned from any book or any classroom could ever teach me. I can still drive around town and look at the spots and tell you who did what trick at what certain spot or who used to hang out at that spot at any given day. If you ask 100 people why they skate you'll get 100 different answers and every single answer will make perfect sense. When we were kids we would dream about California and getting sponsered. But deep down it was never really about that, it was getting stoked that your new deck was there when you got home from school, or seeing someone finally get the guts to drop in on the mini ramp. Skating is in my blood and in my soul and if you're reading this it's more than likely in yours. It's the universal language that we all understand yet never had to learn. Skating isn't Tony Hawk's new video game, it's Tony Magnusson, John Lucero, Lance Mountain, Cab, Jason Jesse, Christian Hosoi, Jason Lee, Gonz, John Cardiel, Huf, Mike Carroll, Rick Howard, Eric Koston, Henry Sanchez, Sal Barbier, Rodney Mullen, Daewon, Ed Templeton, Danny Way and Guy Mariano. And even more importantly it's you and me. I truly hope you "get" what I'm trying to say here in this small essay. The person who runs this blog has been a friend of mine for as long as I can remember. And I want to personally thank him for changing my life all those years ago when he told me to "just roll around while I'm at work." Seasons' isn't dead...I've just been a little busier than usual since the holidays ended. Review: Never Summer 'Made In America'

I hail from a small town south of Pittsburgh, PA called Belle Vernon. Growing up, there was only a small handful of skateboarders and snowboarders so we were all a pretty closely knit group of friends. When someone would get "hooked up" in any way from any company, the stoke was shown throughout the group. Over the years our close band of brothers eventually disbanded and, for the most part, grew up...and most of us lost touch. So when I first read that an old friend, Jason Hindman, was riding for Never Summer snowboards and would have footage in their new video Made In America, I wore a grin from ear to ear. Jason's dad, Ross, owned and operated the first "real" snowboard shop in the Pittsburgh area, Revolutions, and I had the pleasure of working there for a number of years. During those years I got to spend time with his son Jason and experience what an awesome person and gifted
snowboarder he is. So yeah, way to go Jason, go get some! But, in regards to the video itself, job well done. When I first started snowboarding there weren't many "team" videos like you see in the skateboarding world, but rather an amalgamation of riders from different companies under one video production company (ie: Absinthe, Standard, etc.) Over the past years though I'm noticing a lot more team videos and I'm all for it. I still enjoy the mixed crew videos but I'm all for a little change up to make things more interesting. Made In America features the entire Never Summer team from what I can tell, and they all really rip. There's quite a diverse selection of riding ranging from parks, urban rails, and trees all the way to gnarly backcountry lines. I have to admit, I'm a little biased and I have to give my "favorite section" up to Jason Hindman, haha. But all in all, the entire cast

The past few nights I've been watching the old Girl and Chocolate videos (Goldfish, Las Nueve Vidas de Paco, Mouse and The Chocolate Tour). It's been quite a while since I've watched them and silly me, I must've forgotten how incredible they are. I remember being in the ninth grade and reading in Thrasher that Mike Carroll and Rick Howard (and pretty much every other pro I idolized at the time) were leaving the Rocco camp to start a new company. I was so bummed out, I wanted Plan B to stay the same forever...(Questionable and Virtual Reality were and still are my favorite videos of all time [Blind Video Days comes in third]...both had the biggest impact on me during that period of my life.) I distinctively remember mentally freaking out because for some reason, I never got around to skating an actual Mike Carroll Plan B deck. I had every other Plan B pro's deck besides a Carroll. I
didn't want a Girl Mike Carroll, I wanted a Plan B one, and it was too late. I remember my friend Josh ordered a Girl Mike Carroll (it had a black/grey/white graphic of a film strip with a man smoking a cigar on it) and I didn't talk to him for a few days because he was supporting Girl and not Plan B. My boycott didn't last very long though. I think I realized how incredible it was that a group of friends came together to start something of their own, and to run things the way they felt was "the right way."...plus, how could I hate on a crew like Girl/Chocolate?! I ended up ordering a Girl Jovantae Turner deck shortly down the road and from that point on I was a full blown fan of Girl. I wore my original copy of Goldfish out. That era in skateboarding was incredible. The skating, the board graphics, the shoes, the clothes, the music, everything...it's all untouchable. Some people say
history repeats itself...and in some cases I agree, it does. But with skateboarding it's not going to...it can't. Certain things only happen once and I feel lucky to have been around during this era to experience it. I think that's the main reason I attempt to collect old skateboards. They give me something physical to hold on to, something I can actually touch...to go along with the memories I have from that time in my life.

Review: Teton Gravity Research - Deeper

I had the pleasure of watching Deeper, the new Jeremy Jones snowboard film released by Teton Gravity Research earlier today. This film is epic. The riding is epic. The situations are epic. While I was watching it I kept saying, out loud, "holy sh!t!," over and over again. The terrain Jeremy Jones and his crew were accessing is jaw dropping. There's really no way I can put into words the epicness of their riding. I'm pretty much speechless. The way it was filmed makes the viewer feel as if they're right there with them at times thanks in part to the use of helmet cams. I'd like to know how the hell someone built that hut in the Chamonix segment...seriously, how does one make something like that happen?? My hat goes off to Mr. Jones, all of the other riders featured in the film, the filmers, as well as TGR and all of the film's sponsors for making it all come to fruition. If you're a
snowboarder (or even if you're not) you simply must watch this film, it'll make you want to take your riding to the next level and put a big cheesy grin on your face.

Review: Absinthe Films - Now/Here

I've been looking forward to the new Absinthe film "Now/Here since before I even watched the trailer. I didn't even need to watch the trailer...I didn't even need to hear people's reactions after it had it's debut screening. Every season, year after year, Absinthe's films never disappoint. Now/Here is top-effing-notch snowboarding through and through. I have a soft spot for the type of snowboard film that showcases every aspect of snowboarding; epic AK runs, pillows lines, urban rails/streets, parks, goofing off/hi jinx...Absinthe brings it all to the table and then some. I can't say which part was my favorite because they all are pretty much. There will be no skipping parts with this dvd, I'll be watching it from beginning to end every time. And as always, the musical selections are top notch as well (note: it was very nice to hear Primus in there, makes me think of TB2). If you're a
snowboarder then you owe it to yourself to go out and purchase Now/Here and treat yourself to one of the finest snowboard films of the season.

Gravis "Dylan Rieder" and Emerica "Stay Gold"

If you haven't had the chance to watch it yet, head on over to the Gravis site and check out the short film titled "dylan rieder." If features the skating of, you guessed it, Dylan Rieder which is phenomenal...super sick, smooth style for miles, a good soundtrack...watch it a few times then go outside and get your skate one. I got a copy of it on dvd with the latest issue of The Skateboard Mag and it also contains some bonus skating from Arto Saari, Steve Forstner, and Javier Mendizabal. All in all it's an awesome little skate video with a full part from Dylan.

Next up is the brand spanking new Emerica video, Stay Gold (which was 5 years in the making). The entire video, from start to finish is top notch. Heath Kirchart has a career retrospective part which bleeds into his new footage, and is in fact his farewell video segment as he's now retired from the pro ranks of skateboarding (also, his part is an "easter egg," go to the chapter select screen, highlight "back to main" and hit the right arrow button, then enter). Like I said, the entire video is incredible and every skater gave it their all, but my favorites are Hsu, Leo, Reynolds, Herman, Westgate, Kirchart, and Barrier Kult (again, their part is an easter egg, go to the bonus section, highlight andrew's madness section, hit the left arrow, then enter). Head on over to your local shop and pick this up for under $20, and put a smile on your face.

Last Christmas my wife got me two different sized Mizu water bottles, I've used one of the two everyday. I noticed a month or two ago that one of the screw on caps was retaining water inside of it and I couldn't get it out. This drove me crazy so I sent an email to the people at Mizu, time passed and I forgot that I even sent the email. Flash forward a month or so, and I receive an email from them apologizing for the delayed response (my email was stored in their junk folder, spam) and notifying me that some new caps were on their way to me. They showed up a few days later along with some stickers and a note from Jussi (Oksanen, pro rider and owner of Mizu). This is Weekend's second year in the snowboard industry and they've added another board to their line up for the upcoming season. They're first offering is Mark Carter's board of choice the Ten Sleep. The Ten Sleep is a directional twin, geared towards aggressive all mountain terrain ripping, and it can even handle the occasional pow run too. It's available to you in a 156, 158, and 160. With snowboard graphic legend and renowned painter Mike Parillo's graphics to boot, this board is golden.

Next (and lastly) is Heikki Sorsa's pro series of decks, available in 153, 155, and 157. Apparently Heikki fell in love with last year's Weekend's Lodge series of boards and this year adapted it as his very own pro model series. The graphics change but the board stays the same. The graphics are board game themed and were done by some artistic powerhouses...153 = Steve Nazar, 155 = Sean Barnhart, and the 157 = Dustin Ortiz.
